President Joe Biden invited the Kansas City Chiefs to the White House on Friday to celebrate their second consecutive Super Bowl win. Gathered on the South Lawn, the team stood behind Biden as the president congratulated the Chiefs for their victory. Biden also commented on their back-to-back win, alluding to Biden’s campaign in the upcoming presidential election.
After the Super Bowl parade shooting, Biden also acknowledged the team’s efforts to comfort fans. Fans initially criticized the team for partying after one woman was fatally shot and eight others injured.
Following Biden’s speech, coach Andy Reid gifted the president a Chiefs helmet. Some players cheered and encouraged Biden to wear the helmet. After putting it on, Chiefs players gave Biden a round of applause and more cheers.
The helmet is Biden’s second gift from the Chiefs. Last year, the team gave the president a personalized jersey during their visit to the White House.
During Friday’s celebration, Biden called Travis Kelce to the microphone, a callback to when the tight end snuck up to the podium last year. Kelce humorously said, “My fellow Americans, it’s nice to see you all again.”
“I’m not gonna lie, President Biden,” Kelce said. “They told me if I came up here, I’d get tased, so I’m gonna go back to my spot.” Kelce rejoined his teammates behind the podium.
Reid later praised the White House visit: “We got the royal treatment and a nice tour. I don’t know how many presidents have tried on your team helmet. This might be a first . . . so it’s history being made.”
In a post-ceremony interview, quarterback Patrick Mahomes expressed his excitement about showing his teammates, who were not present at last year’s visit, the White House.
“Hopefully, we get to come back again,” Mahomes stated. “I’ll appreciate it every single time.”
