On the first day that tickets for Hello, Dolly! were up for sale, more than $9 million in tickets were sold, breaking Broadway records, reported People magazine. Tickets had gone on sale Saturday, and within a day, the show had brought in $9,082,497.
“We are thrilled with the tremendous response from Hello, Dolly! ticket-buyers,” Schubert Organization chairman Philip J. Smith and Schubert president Robert E. Wankel said in a statement. “The combination of this show and Bette Midler has proven irresistible to theatergoers.”
Midler’s Hello, Dolly! revival is scheduled to begin previews in March 2017, and will officially open at Manhattan’s Schubert Theatre April 20.
When the show gets underway in the spring, Midler stands to become one of the highest-paid actors on Broadway. Not only is the actress and singer slated to earn a weekly paycheck of about $150,000 for playing the titular matchmaker in Hello, Dolly!, she also stands to collect a cut of the box office as well as the merchandising revenues.
