Following in the footsteps of fellow 90s musical sensation Britney Spears, the Backstreet Boys plan to take up residency in Las Vegas and perform a long string of shows. The boy band, which includes McLean, Howie Dorough, Kevin Richardson, Nick Carter, and Brian Littrell, announced last week that they will be reuniting for a time at the AXIS Theater at Planet Hollywood Resort & Casino in Vegas next year.
A.J. McLean, the former Backstreet Boy, expects their Las Vegas show to be “over the top” and “mind-blowing.”
“We’re hopefully going to have some of the biggest elements from all of our biggest tours, songs and shows,” McLean told reporters. “This whole city is about live shows and being over-the-top, so it’s going to be no-holds-barred. It will be the biggest show we’ve ever done in 24 years because it’s fricken Vegas — we gotta go big! We literally want people breathless as they leave.”
He went on to describe the band’s motivation behind the announcement, which came after seeing Spears’s show, Piece of Me Sin City, which will wrap next May. “We’ve known Brit for years,” he said. “Me and Kevin [sic] went to see her show earlier this year and right before it started she had me come up to her dressing room to take a selfie with us. We started talking and I was asking lots of questions, ‘How do you like this? Is it cool? ‘Cause we’re trying to do the same thing.’”
“She literally said, ‘This is the best job ever!’” He continued, “she said that it’s hard work, but easy in the sense that you get to be with your family more than when you’re on tour, and have somewhat of a normal life.”
The Backstreet Boys will begin their Larger Than Life residency next year, and tickets will become available on Oct. 1.
