‘Avengers: Age Of Ultron’ Review Roundup: Critics Satisfied With Marvel Sequel

Avengers: Age of Ultron reunites the evil-fighting heroes of the Marvel universe once again to combat evil forces to dizzying and destructive ends.

In Age of Ultron, Tony Stark aka Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.) tries to get a peacekeeping project off the ground. However, things don’t exactly go to plan as the villainous Ultron promises to wreak havoc on Earth. Rounding up the troops, Iron Man, recruits Captain America (Chris Evans), Thor (Chris Hemsworth), The Incredible Hulk (Mark Ruffalo), Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson) and Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner) to go to battle with him.

Avengers: Age of Ultron Reviews

Reviews have generally been favorable about Joss Whedon‘s second Avengers film, praising the balance of the compulsory action sequences with the humanity of the characters carrying them out. Though imperfect, Age of Ultron should not disappoint fans of the Marvel franchise, and will likely make them eager for the studio’s lineup of films starring the popular comic book characters.

“I can tell you that the film delivers; it’s big, it’s often dazzling and it’s good fun. If it at times feels a bit familiar … well, the original “Avengers” movie was pretty terrific, and there’s only so much new that Whedon can bring this time to the saving-the-world-in-high-tech-outfits thing.
But as before, the greatest fun is in watching the original Avengers, all fine actors who’ve made the characters their own.” – Moira Macdonald, Seattle Times

“Beneath the thoughtful ridiculousness and blithe sound and fury of Avengers: Age of Ultron lies the core idea that drives this whole hugely profitable franchise. You see, these people are just like us, only more awesome. They crack wise on one another and drop pop culture references amid the mass destruction. They go out for drinks together and get jocular. Their egos need feeding, and they yearn for stability. […] By making the Avengers snarky rivals as well as brothers and sisters in arms, franchise Big Brain Joss Whedon injects exactly what such a noisy spectacle needs: a dollop of charm.” – Chris Vognar, Dallas Morning News

For those more concerned with what “The Avengers” movies do best—outsize spectacle and wry comedy—“Age of Ultron” has to be declared a victory. “Victory should be honored with revels,” declares hammer-throwing Scandinavian elocutionist Thor (Chris Hemsworth). “Who doesn’t love revels?” answers snark specialist Stark. “Revels” is a good word to describe it all, if one tends to revel in effects-driven mass destruction for the good of mankind.” – John Anderson, Wall Street Journal

“It’s the, shhh, quieter moments in Joss Whedon’s $279 million superhero extravaganza that stand out. Never mind the “extinction level events,” as Stark  calls these apocalyptic altercations. How about Stark and Bruce Banner, Steve Rogers, Natasha Romanov and Clint Barton sitting on a couch at Avengers HQ, each pulling and prodding, huffing and puffing, trying to budge Thor’s enchanted hammer, Mjolnir, from the coffee table. The magic mallet remains firmly planted until its rightful owner, the blondie-locked Asgardian god of thunder played by Chris Hemsworth, casually takes it in hand. It’s the between-the-mayhem moments that work best, that bring out the humor in Whedon’s screenplay, even if some of Downey’s deadpan asides are as predictable as Ultron’s evildoing pronouncements.” – Steven Rea, Philadelphia Inquirer

The Avengers: Age of Ultron is currently in wide release.
