The 5th-gen iPad from Apple will likely be narrower and shorter than its predecessor and more closely resemble the iPad Mini, according to tech rumors.

A video was posted earlier this week that puts the shell of the new iPad up against Apple’s previous version of the tablet device by Chinese parts supplier swbox.com. The six-minute video also shows a visual comparison between the 5 shell and that of the current iPad mini.

According to the video, the iPad 5 will be slightly shorter than its predecessor – 239.2mm versus 241.2 mm, and also less wide – 169.5mm versus 185.7mm. The 5 will be thinner than the 4 as well, measuring at 7.2mm thick – a 2.2mm difference.

Besides the size differences, there are a few other changes apparent from the new shell: the speaker is on the bottom center of the device, two distinguished volume buttons, an additional microphone on the back of the tablet and rounded edges for an improved grip.

As of yet, Apple hasn’t made any formal announcements concerning their tablet device. It’s anticipated, however, that the software company will keep to their 2012 schedule with an iPad announcement in mid to late October.
