Actress Angie Harmon’s dog, Oliver, was shot and killed by an Instacart driver on March 30.
Harmon placed an Instacart order for her family’s Easter celebration. During the delivery process, she believed she was communicating with an older woman by the name of “Merle”; however, the delivery driver that appeared at her home was a young man named Christopher Anthoney Reid, who shot her dog.
The bullet broke all of Oliver’s ribs and exited under his left arm. Oliver was immediately taken to an emergency vet but did not survive.
The driver claimed that the action was performed as “self-defense,” but Harmon said that there was no evidence of this.
“[H]e didn’t have a mark on him,” Harmon told People. “He didn’t have a scratch; he didn’t have torn jeans. He didn’t have puncture marks. Most importantly, he didn’t ask for help.”
The police officers at the scene of the incident did not file charges against Reid because of his claim of “self-defense,” so Harmon decided to take matters into her own hands by suing Instacart and Reid. The suit alleges that Reid had “ample opportunity” to leave the home safely without causing harm to the dog and that Reid was impersonating Merle on the Instacart app. Harmon is seeking over $25,000, but the exact sum will be determined at the court trial.
Instacart said that they suspended the driver after the incident and were in contact with law enforcement on their own investigation.
“Our hearts continue to be with Ms. Harmon and her family following this disturbing incident,” Instacart said in a statement to Page Six. “While we cannot comment on pending litigation, we have no tolerance for violence of any kind, and the shopper account has been permanently deactivated from our platform.”
Because of the incident, Harmon and her family are currently in therapy for PTSD. She shares three children—Finley, Avery, and Emery—with former NFL star Jason Sehorn, whom she divorced in 2014.
