One Direction and Katy Perry were big winners, taking home three awards each, but it was performances that stole the show during Sunday night’s American Music Awards.
While Perry was a big winner of the night, earning the title of both Favorite Pop/Rock Female Artist and Favorite Adult Contemporary Artist, Iggy Azalea was a close second, taking home two awards – winning Favorite Rap/Hip hop Album for her debut album, The New Classic, and taking home the award for Favorite Rap/Hip Hop Artist.
“This award is the first award I’ve ever won in my entire life and it means so much to me that it is for Best Hip-Hop, because that’s what inspired me to move to America and pursue my dreams and it’s what helped me when I was a teenager to escape and to get through my life and to better times,” Azalea told the crowd.
Azalea had a very busy night. Not only did the rapper win two awards, she also took the stage in two separate performances – once to perform a medley of her songs “Fancy” and “Beg For It,” and then again to close out the show, performing “Booty” with Jennifer Lopez.
Of course, Azalea only accounted for a fraction of the 18 total performances that took place during the 2014 AMAs. Other performers included Mary J. Blidge, Garth Brooks and, of course, Taylor Swift, who also took home the very first Dick Clark Award For Excellence. Diana Ross introduced Swift and gave her the award, which recognized Swift for being the first artist with three albums selling more than 1 million copies in their debut week.
“What you did by going out and investing in music and albums is saying you believe in the same thing I believe in. That music is valuable and should be consumed in albums and albums should be consumed as art and appreciated,” Swift said, making a small dig at Spotify.
Swift’s friends, Lorde and Selena Gomez also performed. With Gomez giving an emotional performance of her newest single, “Heart Wants What It Wants,” and Lorde performing her single off The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 1 soundtrack, “Yellow Flicker Beat.”
