American Horror Story’s fourth season subtitle has been the subject of rumors since Coven wrapped up earlier this year. Finally, it’s been confirmed that the next installment of the horror series will be Freak Show.

Ryan Murphy, who’s played coy amidst the constant speculation, has confirmed the title on Twitter.

Last week, American Horror Story writer and executive producer Douglas Petrie, slipped up in an interview, admitting that the upcoming season would center around carnival of sorts. During a Nerdist Writers Panel podcast recording, Castle and Arrow writer and fellow guest Moira Kirkland, who’d heard the rumors, said, “I don’t know if it’s true, but I heard carnival,” after Petrie initially declined to answer about the season.

"Yes — that was the…,” Petrie chimed in with hesitation. “It… It doesn’t have a title.”

The Nerdist podcast moderator Ben Blacker pressed Petrie, “But that’s the setting?” Petrie answered, “That’s the idea; that’s very roughly the idea.”

AHS Rumors, Jessica Lange

Murphy previously shut down rumors that the fourth season of American Horror Story would be in a circus. Responding to American Horror Story: Circus fanart, Murphy said, "I saw those posters,” to Entertainment Weekly, adding, “I don’t know where people came up with that idea. Sometimes I think its people wanting us to do topics and doing fan posters. No one has completely guessed what it is.”

Prior to confirming the subtitle, Murphy had revelaed a few plot details, including the era the season will depict and that series star Jessica Lange wil get to play a Marlene Dietrich-like character. "If you look historically what happened in the year 1950, there's some more clues in that year. It's a period piece," Murphy told EW. "We try and do the opposite of what we've done before. Jessica Lange has already started practicing her German accent so I'm very excited!"

American Horror Story creators and members of the cast are set to appear at a panel for the show at PaleyFest 2014 on March 28, when more details are sure to be revealed.

American Horror Story: Freak Show will debut on FX in October.
