Alanis Morissette
Business manager Jonathan Todd Schwartz admitted to embezzling more than $7 million from Alanis Morissette and his other celebrity clients.
Schwartz pleaded guilty to the charges of wire fraud and filing false tax returns for failing to report the embezzled funds. He admitted to stealing almost $5 million from Morissette alone between May 2010 and January 2014. He listed the cash withdrawals as “sundry/personal expenses” and spent the money personally in an attempt to cover his tracks.
Later, when questioned, Schwartz said he invested the money in an illegal pot business. The remaining $2.3 million he stole came from other celebrities who were not named in court documents.
According to defense lawyer Nathan Hochman, Schwartz took responsibility for his actions and cooperated fully with police. His plea deal will lead to a sentence of between four and six years in prison, though a judge could potentially give up to 23 years for the crimes.
Schwartz was found out by Morissette, who noticed the discrepancy when she moved to a different manager. “This was shocking and disappointing,” said Chris Reeder, the attorney at Schwartz’s former company GSO. “The company is very happy he’s being brought to justice and held accountable for his actions.”
Reeder also confirmed that GSO has repaid all clients of the funds stolen by Schwartz. Morissette settled her suit against Schwartz and GSO last year. Schwarts will appear before a US District Court on Feb. 1.
