After Controversial Right-Wing Rep. Nancy Mace Claims She Was Assaulted By Transgnder-Rights Activist, Suspect Pleads Not Guilty
Following the alleged assault of Rep. Nancy Mace (R-South Carolina), a suspect has been arrested in relation to the crime.
In an X post, Mace announced, “I was physically accosted at the Capitol tonight by a pro-tr*ns man. One new brace for my wrist and some ice for my arm, and it’ll heal just fine.”
She further informed, “The Capitol police arrested the guy,” and declared, “Your tr*ns violence and threats on my life will only make me double down. FAFO.” She closed her post #HoldTheLine.
It is unclear exactly what the nature of the assault was.
U.S. Capitol Police said they have detained the assailant, though they did not mention Mace in their statement, sharing “House Division officers and agents with the Threat Assessment Section tracked down the suspect.”
Police also informed that the place where the assault took place, the Rayburn Office Building, is open to the public, although McIntyre underwent a screening test in order to enter the building.
The man detained, James McIntyre, 33, from Illinois, faces a charge of assaulting a government official. In court, McIntyre entered a plea of not guilty.
Mace has made headlines in the last few months for her introduction of a bill that bans transgender women from using women’s restrooms at Capitol Hill. Mace has promoted the bill as an attempt to preserve women’s private spaces.
The bill was specifically introduced after Rep. Sarah McBride (D-Delaware) became the first transgender person elected to Congress. Since McBride’s election, Mace has promoted her belief that a transgender woman’s presence in the bathroom is comparable to assault.
A study found that the Trump campaign spent $200 million on anti-trans ads in the week before the election.
