‘Adrift’ Blu-Ray Review: Shailene Woodley Shines In True Story Of Survival At Sea

When a film manages to intertwine classic romance with the thrills typically linked to survival amid deadly circumstances, it’s definitely successful from an artistic standpoint.

That is exactly what Adrift is. This true tale of lovers Tami Oldham (Shailene Woodley) and Richard Sharp (Sam Claflin) sees the couple jump on a boat and traverse more than 3,000 nautical miles from Tahiti to San Diego in 1983. Unfortunately, the sailors have to face Hurricane Raymond, one of the deadliest storms in modern history. They are then forced to battle vicious winds, the perilous ocean water and injuries, among other things.

The shots of nature in this movie from Icelandic director Baltasar Kormakur (Everest) are undoubtedly amazing to watch, but one of the facets of the film that stands out the most is Woodley’s performance. The young actress completely immerses herself into the role of Tami Oldham, who wrote the memoir upon which the movie is based. Woodley displays grit, desperation, resilience, fear and unwavering love and determination throughout the course of the story, which sees her and Claflin’s Richard face seemingly insurmountable odds. The two actors show great chemistry in this tale that proves love and perseverance alone can serve as extremely powerful weaposn even in the most unlikely of situations.

Blu-ray special features include deleted scenes and three featurettes: “Survival at Sea,” which includes interviews with the cast and crew, “Braving the Elements” — a behind-the-scenes look at shooting the film in open waters — and “Journey,” a description of the voyage shown in Adrift as presented by Woodley.

Adrift may not necessarily be the ultimate love story or survival flick: but it certainly manages to combine both genres in a more than pleasantly adept way.
