ABC has canceled long-running crime series Castle.

ABC Cancels ‘Castle’ After 8 Seasons

The cancelation comes amid a list of other shows ABC canceled on Thursday, including: Nashville, Agent Carter, The Muppets, Galavant and The Family.

The cancelation also comes after ABC Studios reportedly signed new contracts with Castle lead Nathan Fillion as well as co-stars Seamus Dever, and Jon Huertas for Season 9.

ABC faced backlash from Castle fans last month — after announcing that co-lead Stana Katic would not be coming back for Season 9, along with fellow original cast member Tamala Jones, due to budget cuts and reported clashes with Fillion.

Executive producers Alexi Hawley and Terence Paul Winter assured fans that they shot a final scene that could act as closure for the series.

“If we hear that we’re not coming back, we have shot something that we can put at the end of the episode as a way to put a button on everything,” Hawley told EW.

“Obviously that would be a bad thing, because it would mean no more. We did it in order to try to protect the fans, because you can’t end the series on a cliffhanger,” the producer explained.

“The hope is that it never sees the light of day,” Winter added.

The Castle series finale will air on Monday, May 16, at 10 p.m. on ABC.
