A$AP Rocky Update: Rapper Charged With Assault In Stockholm Fight

Rapper A$AP Rocky has been charged with assault after a fight in Stockholm in June.

The rapper recorded a video of two young men who were following the rapper and his crew for blocks. Eventually, a fight broke out which caused the rapper to get arrested.

One of the men seen in the video, who is apparently a 30-year-old man named Rakim Mayers, has been in custody since July 3 following a confrontation in the Swedish capital on June 30.

A$AP Rocky’s lawyer, Slobodan Jovicic, stated that the rapper was defending himself after being assaulted and that his client is innocent.

“We think it was self-defense, but the prosecutor has chosen to go with the injured party’s version,” Jovicic said. He also added that Rocky is “very disappointed” that the prosecutor has “chosen to go with the other party’s version” of events.

Swedish public prosecutor Daniel Suneson claims that the rapper and two other men assaulted the victim by kicking and beating him with a whole or part of a glass bottle.

Suneson said that he determined the events constituted a crime “despite claims of self-defense and provocation” after reviewing video material and witness statements.

“It is worth noting that I have had access to a greater amount of material than that which has previously been available on the internet,” said Suneson. “In addition to video material, the injured party’s statements have been supported by witness statements.”

Suneson is relying on cell phone videos, surveillance video from the Grand Hotel, a burger restaurant, and text messages from the rapper’s bodyguard where he talks about the assault and where they say they’ve recorded it and texts from the assistant’s phone.

In one of the videos the rapper posted on his Instagram, it appears that the rapper grabbed one of the men and threw him to the ground. Another angle showed Rocky and his crew kicking and punching the man.

Suneson said there were two injured in the assault, but allegations of one were dropped to insufficient evidence and the prosecution only related to one injured party.

Court documents claim that the rapper forcefully threw the victim to the ground before assaulting the man. Rocky’s bodyguard made a counter allegation but Suneson added that the case was closed.

According to a transcript of police questioning that included court documents, the rapper justified the violence saying his bodyguard tried to “calm things down” before the fight and that “we were three against two.”

Rocky was asked about his role during the fight and he allegedly told police that he “got him down on the ground,” and that he “hit and kicked.”

The rapper’s case caught the attention of many celebrities such as Justin Bieber, who thanked President Donald Trump on Twitter for helping to try and release his friend.

However, authorities in Sweden have said that they will not be swayed by international pressure.

“The Swedish judicial system is completely independent and does not take into consideration outside the pressure from politicians or others,” a spokesman for the Swedish prosecution authorities said.

Trump stated in a tweet that he offered to personally vouch for the rapper’s bail, but the bail system does not exist in Sweden.

Trump was involved in the case after the request of Kim Kardashian West and Kanye West, who have spoken to Secretary of State Mike Pompeo about the rapper’s case.

Trump’s son-in-law and senior White House adviser Jared Kushner has also participated to try to get the rapper released.

The trial will begin on Tuesday.
