South African innovator, billionaire and purveyor of a certain dystopia, Elon Musk, 50, recently split from Canadian pop musician Grimes, placing her among the ranks of Musks’ bizarre collection of ex-wives and lovers, which appears to be as erratic and unexplainable as the man himself.

The sudden separation of the couple has left the world wondering about the fate of Grimes and Musks’ 17-month-old son X Æ A-Xii, who is Musks’ sixth child – the other five born to his first wife, Justine Musk. Each romantic prospect Musk has sustained a relationship with bears the similarities of being a caucasian woman who has garnered success in a creative field. It is clear that each of them excited Musks’ inventive sensibilities.

Justine Musk

Justine Musk is a Canadian author that was married to Musk from 2000-2008 and had six children with him: one set of twins and another set of triplets. Justine met Musk while attending Queens University in Ontario, Canada, where Musk reportedly entered her dorm room and asked her out on an ice cream date. In her tell-all article that was published in Marie Claire, “I Was A Starter Wife: Inside America’s Messiest Divorce,” Justine asserted that Musk considered her a “starter wife,” which proved true when he married a movie star 13 years her junior after their divorce. The unpleasant divorce was not in vain for Justine, as she received $2 million in cash money, $80,000 in monthly alimony and child support for an additional 17 years.

Talulah Riley

British actress Talulah Riley, who starred in films such as Pride and Prejudice and The Liability, went on to marry Musk in 2010, only six weeks after his divorce from Justine. The couple divorced in 2012 after a rocky patch, and then remarried in 2013, only to re-divorce in 2016. In an interview on 60 Minutes, the couple disclosed that during their 2013 reconciliation, they lived in a shared home with their five children. Their divorces are considered some of the most expensive ever, with Talulah walking away with $4.2 million in the first split and over $16 million in the second.

Amber Heard

The contentious female lead of Aquaman and No Time to Die began dating Musk in the summer of 2016 and the couple sustained a year-long relationship, until their split in the fall of 2017. An article in Rolling Stone details how Musk attributed their breakup to “intense schedules” and claimed that the timing of their romance “just wasn’t right.” It is reported that Heard’s ex-husband Johnny Depp was jealous of their relationship, and Musk offered Heard 24/7 security during their time together to protect against Depp’s potential wrath. Unlike his other relationships, Musk affirmed that Heard had a more active role in deciding to break up, which, according to Rolling Stone, caused him to “hurt really bad.”

Grimes

The world was equally confused when Musk began dating 33-year-old electronic pop artist Grimes, who was known for her “anti-imperialist” political stances, alienesque aesthetic and eccentric mannerisms. The couple paired up in April 2018 and dated for two years before Grimes announced in 2020 via Instagram that she was pregnant with Musks’ sixth child. Their baby was born in May 2020 and named X Æ A-12, which was later changed to X Æ A-Xii in order to comply with California law. In mid-2021, the forward-thinking couple decided to split, and according to Musk are “semi-separated but still love each other, see each other frequently and are on great terms,” according to Page Six. The two have decided to co-parent X Æ A-Xii, and will continue to maintain their respective careers in Texas and Los Angeles. Since their breakup, Grimes was seen posting a photo of herself with a copy of Karl Marx’s The Communist Manifesto, in what appeared to be a call to her left-leaning former fans to re-accept her after she abandoned her previously staunchly leftist ideology when dating Musk.
