Rapper Tekashi 6ix9ine was admitted to the hospital after overdosing. He allegedly had an adverse reaction after consuming more than the recommended dosage of a weight loss drug while drinking a McDonald’s coffee.
DJ Akademiks, a close fan and friend of 6ix9ine’s, confirmed that he was in fact hospitalized via Instagram, but also noted that the rapper was recovering fine and “in good spirits.”
Akademiks, who has been made fun of in the past for allegedly wanting a romantic relationship with 6ix9ine, was seemingly one of the only people with well wishes for 6ix9ine’s recovery.
“NOBODY CARES AK🤣🤣🤣,” people commented under his post on Instagram.
On Twitter, people replied to the overdose with jokes, some of which people found unnecessarily cruel.
6ix9ine is not new to social media pressure, which he said contributed to the suicidal ideations he experienced while in jail and his relatively low online presence. Recently, he’s been using social media to express anger at low sales of his new album TattleTalez, which he’s convinced are because he was sabotaged by streaming platforms.
Even before landing 6ix9ine in the hospital, Hydroxycut, the weightloss supplement he overdosed on, had gained some infamy in the medical field for being notoriously unsafe. Its original formulations contained an alkaloid called ephedra, which has been known to cause heart problems and seizures, and was banned in 2004. Later formulations contained hydroxycitric acid and other substances which caused severe liver damage, leading the FDA to issue a warning about the supplement. The drug in its most recent formulations is still known to cause heart and digestive issues, and is the brand is simultaneously known for its position as the best selling weight loss supplement and a symbol of the lack of regulation on weight loss products.
