The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) have started jointly investigating a major cash heist in the San Fernando Valley, which may rank among the largest in U.S. history.
According to law enforcement, as much as $30 million was stolen from a money storage facility in Sylmar, an affluent suburban neighborhood in the valley. The burglary occurred on Easter Sunday at a facility that handles and stores cash from businesses across the region.
While the FBI and LAPD have confirmed their investigation into a “large theft” in the San Fernando Valley, they have refrained from any further details and cited the current nature of the investigation. The burglars managed to access the building and enter the vault without triggering any alarms. Investigators are now focused on whether the perpetrators had inside knowledge of the facility, suggesting a potential connection to someone familiar with its operations.
GardaWorld, a reputable private security firm, operated the targeted facility. The involvement of a professional security provider adds a layer of intrigue to the case as questions arise regarding the potential breach and the level of security measures in place.
Before the recent heist, the most significant cash theft in Los Angeles occurred on September 12, 1997, when $18.9 million was stolen from the former location of the Dunbar Armored Inc. facility on Mateo Street. Authorities were eventually able to apprehend the suspects involved in that case.
This incident follows another theft nearly two years ago when approximately $100 million of jewels were stolen from a Brink’s semi-truck at a truck stop near Castaic, adjacent to the 5 Freeway. The investigation into the Castaic heist remains ongoing, with no arrests made thus far.
Authorities are urging anyone with information about the incident to come forward and assist in the investigation. The FBI and LAPD remain committed to bringing the perpetrators to justice and ensuring the safety and security of businesses and the community.
