24% Of Texans Want State To Be An Independent Country, New Poll Says

Over 800 eligible voters in Texas were surveyed on whether they would support Texas becoming an independent country and if they would vote for it.

Thirty-nine percent did not support the succession while 33% did. The rest were unsure or neutral. In a hypothetical referendum, 67% said they would vote for Texas to remain part of the United States.

Texit, inspired by Brexit, is the movement advocating for Texas’ secession from the United States. Texas is the only state which was originally an independent country before joining the union.

Supporters of the independence movement say the poll proves sufficient support for the issue, hoping to have it on future ballots. Critics have debated the results, claiming that the numbers do not provide the full scope of a voter’s opinion.

Full results in a hypothetical vote include 67% for Texas to remain in the U.S., 23% wanting “an independent country” and 10% unsure of their decision, according to the poll conducted by Redfield & Wilton Strategies.

Texas has shown its independence in many ways recently – the state has disobeyed a Supreme Court ruling ordering it to remove razor wire from the southern border in order to prevent migrant crossings.
