This year’s ceremony, conducted by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, follows a scandalous few years for the organization. In 2021 it was revealed that the HFPA, a group of entertainment journalists who dole out the annual awards, didn’t have any black members.

The nonprofit also faced accusations of corruption and had its power called into question in an antitrust lawsuit, which was dismissed. That year, NBC refused to air the award show and many actors, publicists and activists called for the group to make some major reforms going forward.

For its 2023 return, Jerrod Carmichael hosted the Golden Globes, referencing the organization’s tumultuous past in his monologue: “I’m here because I’m black,” he started.

“One minute you’re making tea at home,” Carmichael continued. “The next, you’re invited to be the black face of an embattled white organization.”

Despite the shadow cast on the ceremony by the organization’s sordid history, attendees and viewers shared laughs and tears throughout the night as the winners were announced. In some of the night’s highlights, The Fablemans’ Steven Spielberg took home the prize for best director and best drama picture, a tearful Mike White and hilariously rambling Jennifer Coolidge accepted trophies for The White Lotus towards the end of the evening and Austin Butler brought his best Elvis voice to accept the award for best actor.
