2022 Golden Globe Award Nominations Announced, ‘Belfast’ & ‘Power of The Dog’ Lead
The Hollywood Foreign Press Association has announced the nominations for the 79th Annual Golden Globe Awards this morning.
The HFPA is still trying to move forward with next year’s Globes despite courting controversy this year, sharing a full list of nominees for 2021’s best films and TV series with uInterview.
Of the Motion Picture nominations, Focus Features’ Belfast and Netflix’s The Power of The Dog tied for most film nominations at seven each. Netflix dominated all other studios in the motion picture category, with 17 total nominations for Netflix Films including Don’t Look Up, Tick, Tick…Boom!, and even a Non-English language nominee from Italy in The Hand Of God.
This was a great year for movie musicals in the Musical or Comedy section, with films like Steven Spielberg‘s West Side Story, Cyrano and Tick, Tick…Boom! all picking up lots of nominations.
Another strong performer in the Comedy Motion Picture section was Paul Thomas Anderson‘s new film Licorice Pizza, which earned its lead actors Alana Haim and Cooper Hoffman Best Performance nominations, and Anderson himself a nom for the film’s screenplay.
In the TV section, HBO led with 15 nominations for shows like the critically acclaimed ensemble drama Succession, acerbic industry-skewering sitcom Hacks, and the Kate Winslet-led limited series Mare of Easttown. Succession led the series category in nominations with five total, narrowly beating out both of AppleTV+’s hits The Morning Show and Ted Lasso each with four.
There was a decent balance struck this year between nominating ongoing series that have become award-show darlings like Ted Lasso and Succession, along with very exciting new programming being recognized like Squid Game, Wandavision and Reservation Dogs.
While there is a clear effort to make this year’s list of nominations more diverse, it doesn’t feel like enough has been done yet, especially in the Motion Picture section. Attention was mostly paid towards nominating non-white actors, while the Best Picture, Screenplay, and Directing categories are still overwhelmingly occupied by older white filmmakers like Spielberg, Anderson and Aaron Sorkin.
The TV section doesn’t get out scot-free either, for starters the most-nominated shows have pretty lily-white casts and crews. However, the clear higher diversity in the category speaks to the fact that the TV and streaming industry is making some progress towards giving more underrepresented communities a chance to tell their stories.
The 79th Annual Golden Globe Awards will be held on January 9, 2022.
