On Monday night, several people were injured after a group of 300 people broke out into a stampede during a memorial for Grammy-nominated rapper Nipsey Hussle.
Mourners had fled the memorial outside of Hussle’s clothing store in Los Angeles just after 8 p.m. after supposedly hearing sounds similar to gunshots in the area.
Several officers worked to diffuse the commotion of the petrified fans who were falling on top of each other while trying to flee across the parking lot, as police cars and ambulances raced to the scene.
“Our people are on scene making every effort 2 protect everyone in attendance at the Nipsey Hussle vigil,” LAPD Chief Michel Moore wrote on Twitter around the time the incident broke out. “Reports of shots fired at the vigil do not appear to be accurate. We do have injured in the chaos and are attempting to restore order.”
“Our appreciation to those from our community actively working with members at the vigil to quell violence. Their work is vital,” Moore added in a separate tweet.
Robert Arcos, an LAPD assistant chief, told The Times that a fight between two groups appeared to have sparked the stampede after one person supposedly was disrespected and possibly pulled out a gun.
After the stampede, 19 people were transported to the hospital by the Los Angeles Fire Department, with two in critical condition, including one person who was hurt in a car accident, two people with serious injuries, and 15 with non-life threatening injuries. Of which majority suffered injuries related to being trampled when the crowd broke into chaos.
“The majority of injuries were related to ‘trample injuries’ sustained when the crowd rushed out,” the Los Angeles Fire Department said in a statement.
Fans had gathered at Hussle’s store in wake of his shocking death on Sunday, in which the rapper was shot and killed in broad daylight outside one of his stores in South L.A. in a burst of gunfire that left two other people wounded.
No arrests have been made at this time.
Since the news of Hussle’s sudden death, fans and celebrities have paid tribute to the late rapper on social media, including Rihanna, Drake and John Legend, among many others.
“This doesn’t make any sense!” Rihanna wrote on Twitter alongside a series of photos of Hussle, including one of he and his daughter on the red carpet at the 2019 GRAMMY Awards. “My spirit is shaken by this! Dear God may His spirit Rest In Peace and May You grant divine comfort to all his loved ones! 💔🙏🏿 I’m so sorry this happened to you @nipseyhussle.”
“I just spent Thursday with him filming a video for a beautiful new song we created with Khaled,” Legend wrote on Twitter. “We filmed in Inglewood, close to where he grew up. He was so gifted, so proud of his home, so invested in his community. Utterly stunned that he’s gone so soon.”
“F—. My whole energy is just at a low right now hearing this. We just linked for the first time in years and said we were gonna do a new song this summer cause it had been too long. You were having the best run and I was so happy watching from distance fam nobody ever talks down on your name you were a real one to your people and to the rest of us. I’m only doing this here cause I want the world to know I saw you as a man of respect and a don. Rest easy my g,” Drake shared on his Instagram.
Hussle, 33, leaves behind his longtime love Lauren London, who he dated for five years. The couple, who recently opened up about their relationship to GQ, shared 2-year-old son Kross.
Hussle was also a dad to his daughter Emani from a previous relationship.
