Melissa Schuman filed a lawsuit against Nick Carter for sexual assault and battery on Tuesday evening, accusing the Backstreet Boys singer of raping her when she was 18 in 2003.

Schuman, 38, wrote that Carter used “his role, status and power as a well-known singer to gain access to, groom, manipulate, exploit and sexually assault” her.

She previously came forward in November 2017, describing how Carter allegedly forced himself upon her at his Santa Monica apartment. She wrote about the incident in a blog post at the time: “He was relentless, refusing to take my no’s for an answer.”

In a recent statement, Schuman said she faced “extraordinary backlash” after standing up for herself. She also explained that she was fighting to make the music industry a “safer place” where powerful people cannot “enable and protect sexual predators.”

Carter denied the allegations in 2017, citing that Schuman never said that what they did was not consensual.

In February 2018, Schuman said that she filed a police report against Carter, but the Los Angeles District Attorney’s office did not investigate due to the 10-year limitation time period expiring.

However, in Schuman’s 2023 lawsuit, she cites a California bill that went into effect at the beginning of the year that lifts the statute of limitations for civil actions in regard to adult sexual abuse.

Schuman is a former member of the 2000s girl group Dream. She and Carter were co-stars in the teen TV horror movie The Hollow. Schuman wrote in her blog post that Nils Larsen, her manager at the time, told her that she would do irreparable damage to her career if she made a complaint. This led her to stay silent.

Last month, Carter filed a countersuit against Shannon Ruth, who sued him in December of last year for alleged sexual battery, claiming he raped her on a tour bus in 2001 when she was 17. The countersuit also includes Schuman. stating the two accusers took advantage of the #MeToo movement to “defame and vilify” him.
