VIDEO EXCLUSIVE: Jeff Kinney On Creating An Anti-Hero With His ‘Wimpy Kid’ Series
Jeff Kinney discusses the importance of characters who make mistakes and his new Diary of a Wimpy Kid animated series in his new uInterview.
“This is the first time we’re really seeing Greg on-screen look just like Greg on the page,” Kinney said. “So I think the audience when they see the story they’ll say ‘Oh yeah! This is what the Wimpy Kid universe looks like in real life.’ So I think it’s really exciting. It’s the first time we’ve ever done it and I think it came out really well.”
“I hope that kids and their families get a lot of joy out of these stories,” the author said. “You know, we’ve been through a rough few years so I think it’s really good to have comedy in something that the whole family can enjoy. So I’m really happy with it and I hope that kids are happy with it as well.”
“In Diary of a Wimpy Kid, Greg is a messy character, you know, he makes lots of mistakes, he’s not a hero,” Kinney said. “And I think it’s really important for kids to see other kids who are a little bit messy too. You know, I wasn’t trying to write about a kid who always did the right thing or was brave or strong, you know, he makes lots of mistakes and a lot of the humor in the stories comes from Greg making mistakes.”
Diary of a Wimpy Kid is available on Disney+. Check out the trailer below!
