Casey Affleck Apologizes For ‘Unprofessional’ Conduct After Sexual Harassment Allegations

Casey Affleck is finally apologizing for his inappropriate behavior on a film set in 2010 after sexual harassment accusations against him resurfaced early last year.

The actor — who will be 43 on Sunday — publicly apologized for his misconduct for the first time on Thursday in an interview.

“I behaved in a way and allowed others to behave in a way that was really unprofessional. And I’m sorry,” Affleck told reporters.

“First of all, that I was ever involved in a conflict that resulted in a lawsuit is something that I really regret. I wish I had found a way to resolve things in a different way,” he said. “I hate that,” before adding that the whole situation was “really embarrassing.”

Affleck, the younger brother of Ben Affleck, was accused of verbally and physically harassing two women who worked as crew members on the set of his 2010 film I’m Still Here, a documentary-style film about Joaquin Phoenix that Affleck directed.

Casey initially denied all the allegations against him and ultimately settled a pair of lawsuits filed by the two women. The amounts of the settlements were never disclosed.

Affleck won the Oscar, Golden Globe and BAFTA Award in 2017 for his leading role as a grieving janitor in 2016’s Manchester by the Sea. 

The “#MeToo” movement against sexual harassment started in late 2017 after dozens of famous men in Hollywood and in other industries were taken down for their misconduct. Given the backlash against him from last year, Affleck announced shortly before this year’s Oscars that he would not present the Best Actress Award, as is tradition. Instead, the Academy chose Jodie Foster and Jennifer Lawrence to hand out the prize, which Frances McDormand won for her role in Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri. 

Affleck is next set to play a detective opposite Robert Redford in The Old Man and the Gun, a crime film based on the true story of robber Forrest Tucker. The film, which is set for a Sept. 28 release, will mark Redford’s final role as an actor.
