Emilia Clarke wants it do be known that she did not use a body double for Daenerys Targaryen’s powerful scene emerging from a burning temple naked and unscathed in Game of Thrones‘ latest episode.

Did Emilia Clarke Use Body Double For GOT Nude Scene?

For the last couple of episodes, Clarke’s character, Daenerys, has been housed with fellow khal widows at Vaes Dothrak. By the tradition of the Dothraki people, she is expected to live out her days there. As the Mother of Dragons and the Breaker of Chains, Dany has no intention of fulfilling that expectation. Though it’s assumed that Ser Jorah and Daario will smuggle her out of the sacred Dothraki city, Dany takes matters into her own hands and secures her own freedom.

Inside a temple with all of the khals, Dany torches the place. The temple engulfed in flames, all of the khals burning to death within it, Dany walks through the doors without a burn on her naked body. Immediately, the Dothraki people bow before her. While the significance of Dany gaining the fealty of the Dothraki people is the main takeaway, much has been made of Clarke’s nudity, as she had previously implied she was tired of getting naked for Game of Thrones.

“I’d like to remind people the last time I took my clothes off was season 3,” Clarke told Entertainment Weekly. “That was awhile ago. It’s now season 6. But this is all me, all proud, all strong. I’m just feeling genuinely happy I said ‘Yes.’ That ain’t no body double!”

“Taking off my clothes is not the easiest thing, but with the magic of the effects, I don’t have to do a season 1 and go on a cliff and do it,” Clarke added. “I’m in control of it.”

Clarke shot the scene in question on a closed set in Northern Ireland, while the actors playing the Dothraki people shot their part of the scene in Spain. With behind-the-scenes magic, Games of Thrones was able to put together a seamless and affecting sequence for which showrunner David Benioff gives Clarke much of the credit.

“Emilia absolutely crushed it,” he told EW. It’s one of those weird scenes because it was half shot in Spain, half in Belfast. But largely due to her performance, it works brilliantly.”
