Randy Travis Undergoes Heart Surgery, In Critical Condition
Randy Travis, the award-winning country singer, underwent heart surgery after being admitted to the hospital in critical condition with symptoms related to viral cardiomyopathy.
"We have been told [Travis] has had surgery. Our prayers are going out to him because my husband just had a heart attack last year, so it is in their family,” Travis’ sister-in-law Teresa Traywick said in a statement. "Their mother passed away at an early age with her heart, so it is like these boys are following right in their footsteps. My prayers are with them. That's all I can say right now."
When the “Forever and Ever, Amen” and “Three Wooden Crosses” singer was first admitted to the Texas hospital on Sunday, his publicist revealed that he was suffering from complications related to his recently acquired viral cardiomyopathy. Viral cardiomyopathy is a catchall term for a disorder that can be caused by tens of different viruses. The virus attacks the sufferer's heart muscles, causing it beat slower, and in the worst cases, causes it to stop.
In the last couple of years, Travis has faced a fair amount of adversity. In 2012, he was hospitalized following a brawl near a local Plano, Tex., church. Earlier this year, the country artist pleaded guilty to a DWI charge.
Travis is currently single, having split from his wife and former manager Lib Hatcher after 18 years of marriage in 2010.
