Andrew McCutchen, an outfielder for the Pittsburgh Pirates, proposed to his longtime girlfriend Maria Hanslovan on Ellen DeGeneres’ talk show on Wednesday.

Andrew McCutchen Proposes

McCutchen, who was named the National League MVP this past season, provided a video for Ellen producers to play that featured an extended metaphor relating the baseball diamond to his four years with Hanslovan.

“When I hit a home run it’s a home run, but there’s a bigger picture behind it,” McCutchen says over a montage of his play for the Pirates. “Going to first, going to second, going to third and going home; with each base that I touch, it means a year.”

At the conclusion of the clip, DeGeneres welcomed Hanslovan onstage, where she took a seat for the on-air proposal.

After telling Hanslovan that he imagined telling her how much he loved her on top of a mountain with a voice 1 billion times louder than a lion's roar, he explained why he decided on the talk show. "I didn't do any of this for the publicity. I didn't do any of this for the recognition," McCutchen told Hanslovan. "I did this to show you that if I could tell the whole world how much I love you, I would do that."

Maria Hanslovan Says 'Yes'

The baseball player then got down on one knee and asked Hanslovan to marry him. Clearly surprised by the romantic gesture, Hanslovan eagerly said "yes" and embraced McCutchen. DeGeneres enthusiastically congratulated the couple, and gifted McCutchen with a top hat and Hanslovan with a veil and flowers.

After the show aired, McCutchen took to Twitter to share how thrilled he is that Hanslovan agreed to marry him and will one day be his wife.
