Grey’s Anatomy returned his week with “All I Could Do Was Cry,” an emotional episode in which Jackson (Jesse Williams) and April (Sarah Drew), out of options, come to grips with losing their son.

‘Grey’s Anatomy’ Recap

Herman (Geena Davis) informs April and Jackson that their son has Type 2 osteogenesis imperfecta and that his bones are breaking inside of April’s womb. Jackson’s mom Catherine (Debbie Allen) had come into town to offer some support to the couple, and proposes a course of action that April, struggling with her faith, might be comfortable with. She suggests that they pick a date to induce labor, name and baptize the baby, and hold him until he passes. At first April seems okay with the plan, but soon starts to think that maybe they’ll get a miracle.

While Jackson and April are trying to deal with their tragic circumstances, their friends at Grey Sloan Memorial are trying to figure out a way to be supportive. Arizona (Jessica Capshaw) wants to be their go-to doctor, but Herman nixes that idea, saying she’s too close to them to be truly helpful. Elsewhere, Ben (Jason George) is suggesting they send flowers, Callie (Sarah Ramirez) offers that they cook for them – though April is the only one out of the doctors who knows their way around a kitchen. Amelia (Caterina Scorsone) quietly walks up to the group and says they might want to light a candle in the chapel and give April and Jackson the privacy they most likely want.

This week, Amelia is working on a case involving a young man who can’t see because a tumor is obstructing his vision. She’s doubtful about whether or not she’ll succeed, but she thinks that at the very least she’ll be able to shrink the tumor and extend his life for a couple of years. With a stroke of luck, she manages to give him back his sight. Stephanie (Jerrika Hinton), who’d been in the OR with her, didn’t think he was going to make it. Afterwards, Amelia tells her that if she isn’t willing to fight against the odds, she has no business being a doctor.

Elsewhere in the hospital, a woman is rushed into the ER after her husband accidentally shot her on a duck hunting expedition. While the doctors are looking her over, they realize that she’s pregnant. The woman says that’s impossible, but sure enough she gives birth to a healthy baby girl. The husband explains that they’d been told multiple times that they were unable to have children and that they’d truly had no idea she was with child.

With two healthy children of her own, Meredith (Ellen Pompeo) needs some help looking after them when she goes to visit Derek (Patrick Dempsey) in Washington, D.C. With Cristina gone, she calls on Alex (Justin Chambers) to watch them. When he reveals he’ll be turning over the babysitting duties to Jo (Camilla Luddington), Meredith says that’s not acceptable. At the end of the day, Maggie (Kelly McCreary), having heard about Meredith’s dilemma, offers to watch the kids. She likes to cook and bake, and get on the floor and play – plus, she is their aunt.

As for April and Jackson, they have to sign both a birth certificate and death certificate for their child. While they think it’s all a bit too morbid, Herman explains that it’ll be far better later to have all of the ugly paperwork done already. After they get through the paperwork, they head to the room where they will be inducing labor. They have a lighthearted back and forth about what to name their baby, until the point is driven home that their son will never grow up. Once again thinking that a miracle could be possible, April runs off. In response, Jackson goes to the chapel for his wife, imploring the God he doesn’t believe in to “show up for April.”

April gets the message from God she needed when she comes across a woman in the hospital pretending to be an intern. April learns that the woman’s husband died in the hospital last night, and she’s not been able to leave since. Trying to ease the woman’s pain, April talks to her about loss and finds the strength within herself to experience the inevitable loss of her son. After labor is induced, they name the child Samuel Norbit after Jackson’s uncle. He squeezes April’s finger, let’s go and then he’s gone.

In the chapel, Amelia is sitting there with Owen (Kevin McKidd) at her side. She reveals that she had a child who only lived for 43 minutes, explaining her detachment all day. In response, Owen grabs her hand and they sit in silence.
