U.S. women’s soccer midfielder Rose Lavelle is optimistic about the team’s prospects for the upcoming Paris Olympics, viewing the games as an opportunity for redemption following a disappointing 2023 World Cup performance.
Lavelle, a key player in the U.S. Women’s National Team (USWNT) since 2017, acknowledged the team’s transition phase but expressed confidence in the emerging talent. “I think all the new and young players coming in are so good,” Lavelle said in a recent interview. “I don’t think the level has dropped at all. I think they bring something new and different and special.”
The 28-year-old Cincinnati native, who scored a crucial goal in the 2019 World Cup final, emphasized the team’s determination to bounce back from their early exit in the 2023 tournament. “We’re looking to go into this Olympics ready to attack the challenge and ready for the opportunity to show what we know this team can do,” she stated.
Lavelle also shared her excitement about working with incoming head coach Emma Hayes, who will take the reins after the Olympics. “She has such a winning mentality and such a winning resume,” Lavelle noted. “We all know she’s going to help elevate this team and take this team to an even higher height than it’s been at.”
Addressing the disparities between men’s and women’s sports, Lavelle highlighted the growing attention on women’s soccer. “I think there needs to continue to be that growth,” she said, calling for investments to match the increasing buzz and excitement surrounding women’s sports.
With 24 goals for the national team, Lavelle’s focus is squarely on Olympic gold. “That’s the goal,” she affirmed. However, she stressed the importance of a measured approach, emphasizing preparation for each game and friendly match leading up to the Olympics.
The USWNT, four-time Olympic gold medalist, is looking to reclaim the top spot after settling for bronze in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. Lavelle, who was part of that bronze-medal winning team, will be a crucial component in the U.S. midfield as they aim for gold in Paris.
