Ben Hallock, a key player for the U.S. men’s water polo team, is aiming to win a medal at the 2024 Paris Olympics. The U.S. team hasn’t won a medal in the last few Olympics, but Hallock believes this year could be different.
“My goal is to bring home a medal. We aim to finish in the top four,” Hallock said. “We have a strong team with young and experienced players. Many of us have been to the Olympics before, so we’re definitely hoping to win.”
Hallock, 26, first competed in the Olympics when he was just 18, at the 2016 Rio Games. He spoke about how important the Olympics are to him. “I’ve been thinking about the Olympics since I was 18. The results in my first two Olympics weren’t what we hoped for, so this time it’s personal. I want to finish what I started six years ago. Winning a medal has always been my dream.”
Hallock’s dedication to water polo shows in his tough training schedule. His typical day starts early with weight training at 7:00 a.m. “I wake up at 5:50 to eat a full meal because we work out for many hours,” he said. The team trains with weights from 7:00 to 8:30 a.m., then moves to the pool from 9:15 to 11:30 a.m. for conditioning. After a lunch and rest break, they go back to the pool from 1:30 to 3:00 p.m. for tactical work. “We do six and a half to seven hours of physical work in about nine hours,” Hallock explained. “Then I get home around 4:00 p.m. and focus on recovery.”
