U.S. Olympic swimmer Kate Douglass is eagerly anticipating the 2024 Paris Olympics, where she hopes to make waves in the international swimming arena. Douglass expressed her excitement for herself and the opportunity her friends and family will have to witness the Olympic experience.

“I’m definitely excited to compete, get up there and race the best in the world,” Douglass told uInterview. “But I’m honestly really excited for my friends and family who now get to come and watch me compete and watch my teammates compete and get to experience what the Olympics is about.”

Douglass’s journey in swimming began at a young age. She started with summer league swimming and, despite dabbling in other sports, found her calling in the pool. “I realized I was pretty good at it so I stuck with it through high school,” she noted. “A goal of mine became to swim in college, and that’s what I focused on. Once I got there, I feel like that’s where I really figured out how to reach my full potential in the pool and gain that self-confidence to have goals like making it to the Olympics and being on the national team.”

The 21-year-old swimmer has significantly improved her confidence and performance since the Tokyo Olympics. Despite her progress, Douglass remains focused on continued improvement. “I haven’t reached my peak yet,” she said. “I feel like I’m still improving and still figuring out ways to get better in practice. It’s exciting to see myself improve every year.”

Douglass, a dominant force in U.S. swimming, also shared her evolving perspective on setting ambitious goals. “It’s definitely something that’s difficult to allow yourself to do,” she acknowledged. “In the past, I’ve been very scared of setting goals like that myself because I was afraid of disappointment and failure. But in the last year and a half, I’ve really seen myself excel in the pool and in practice. I’ve figured out how to work really hard and reach those goals.”

Her hard-earned success underscores a broader life lesson that Douglass has embraced: “Hard work pays off. “All of this success—it’s not just given; it’s earned.”
