Singer and songwriter Nya recently released one of her most personal songs ever, titled “Mother’s Daughter.”

Nya recently sat down for a conversation with uInterview founder Erik Meers to discuss the new release and the inspiration behind it.

“I tried to write a song about this topic for the past six to eight years and I always scrapped it and never put it out because it felt like it was too raw or too personal, and I couldn’t capture the feeling I wanted to capture with it,” Nya revealed. “‘Mother’s Daughter’ was the first version of this song that I actually released. It’s about my relationship with my mother and growing up around mental illness. It’s a very complex dynamic. I think sometimes what happens as you’re an adult if you’re in a situation that’s not quite right, you have this feeling that you’ve chosen to be there. Maybe that’s not necessarily true, you know people are very smart with how they can manipulate you, but when it’s your parent and you’re a kid, that’s what you know. There you are. That’s it.

“When you grow up around a mentally ill parent, your version of reality is a bit warped,” she added. “When I was 18, and I left for college, I had a very hard year. One, because that summer my mom attempted suicide, but also because I was just starting to understand that a lot of things I thought were normal weren’t really normal. For me, ‘Mother’s Daughter’ is not an angry song, and that was really important to me. It’s not an ‘I hate you’ song. I do have a good relationship with my mom now, but it is a song about the lost feeling and sadness and fear that you have when you’re coming from that situation.”

Nya also revealed what fans can expect from the sound of her new music.

“I think my sound is ever evolving, but for me, it’s always got a bit of soul at its core,” Nya said. “Right now, this iteration, it’s pop and a little alternative. Really the thing that connects my music for me is having a very vulnerable message in the songwriting. That’s what I like for all the songs to be tethered by specifically.”

Stream “Mother’s Daughter” today and be on the lookout for Nya’s EP out next year.
