Audrey Hepburn’s son Sean Hepburn Ferrer revealed why his mother was almost not cast in Breakfast at Tiffany’s in a new uInterview.
In the new documentary, Audrey, Hepburn Ferrer discussed how his mother put her foot down when the icon song “Moon River” was almost removed from the iconic movie.
“She didn’t get to be the Audrey Hepburn, the Audrey Hepburn we know, because she was a sweet gentle pushover,” he told uInterview’s Erik Meers. “You know, she had to fight for every little tidbit.”
He explained that she also worked hard to research her roles.
“She prepared this way for Wait Until Dark the last film she did before she stopped her career to become a full time mom. She spent time in a center for the blind people to learn,” he said.
He went on to say that his mother’s popularity may have stemmed from her ability to keep one foot in the golden age of Hollywood, while still growing with modern media.
“I think she’s too young to be really only a part of the golden era of Hollywood. She sort of has one leg in that, she sort of the last one to come on in that line up, and of course having grown up with those extraordinary characters she picked them to be in her films,” Hepburn Ferrer said, naming her fellow cast members, including Gary Cooper, Fred Astaire and Humphrey Boggart.
“So she’s also part of the new age, in a way,” he continued, “even though she doesn’t really participate in those films with those directors … I think the reason that she has survived and is still so liked is probably because she has this freshness that’s not readily sort of associated with the golden age of cinema, which is sort of static.”
“She may have been in those films with those directors, but she approached it in a fresher kind of a way,” Hepburn Ferrer said.
