Brody Malone is ready for a potential second Olympic appearance at the 2024 Paris Games, but the 23-year-old gymnast is taking a levelheaded approach to expectations.
“I haven’t made the team quite yet, so I still have to go through that process,” Malone said in his new uInterview. “To be honest with you, I don’t like to have expectations going into a competition. I’m very much a take it one day at a time guy and take what the day gives you and try to make the best of it. So I try not to set those expectations because it will take me out of the zone.”
Even though Malone is cautious, the chance to compete in another Olympics would be a great honor.
“It would be awesome. It would be my second Olympic games, and anytime you get the opportunity to represent your country on the Olympic stage, it’s an honor and a blessing,” he stated. “I’d be super happy to be able to do that again.”
Malone made his Olympic debut at the delayed 2021 Tokyo Games, contributing to the U.S. men’s team winning a silver medal in the team final. Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the competition took place without spectators.
“This will be a very different Olympics cause with all the Covid stuff, there were no spectators allowed or anything like that,” Malone recalled. “So the first day we competed, it was completely empty in the arena, and it was dead silent. So being able to compete in front of a crowd is always super fun because you can kind of feed off of their energy, and it just makes it a lot more fun.”
As Malone trains, his daily routine is intense but structured. The Georgia native gets up early, around 5:30 or 6 a.m., and heads to the gym for practice from 9 a.m. until early afternoon. He also goes to physical therapy for a knee injury. After preparing dinner, Malone goes to bed early to rest for the next day’s workouts.
As the 2021 Winter Cup all-around champion, Malone has been a senior national team member since 2017. In addition to his Olympic team silver, he won an individual silver on the high bar at the 2019 World Championships.
In the coming months, Malone will aim to earn a spot on the five-man U.S. Olympic team through the national championship and Olympic trial competitions. The artistic gymnastics events at the 2024 Paris Olympics are scheduled for July 28-August 3
