VIDEO EXCLUSIVE: Nicolette Robinson & Jack Huston Share The Message Behind Their New Movie ‘Day Of The Fight’

Jack Huston and Nicolette Robinson sat down for a conversation with uInterview in which they shared the meaning behind their new movie Day of the Fight.

Day of the Fight follows the once-renowned champion boxer Mikey while he prepares for his first fight post-prison. As he prepares, He looks back to the past to reconnect with those he lost and grant himself redemption through amends.

The sports drama is Huston’s directorial debut, who until now has made his career as an actor. Asked what propelled him to approach the story from a different end of the camera, Huston told uInterview founder Erik Meers, “I was in no hurry to direct. I wanted to, but I was in no hurry…I think an early piece of advice was, ‘If you’re going to do something, you have to do it with all of your heart, and you have to love it,’ – otherwise you sacrifice blood, sweat and tears, time, money, loved ones, sleepless nights – every single thing that could go wrong – shortening your life by god knows how many years…and when the idea came to me…I did feel a little bit like this was the idea, if I didn’t direct it I would regret it for the rest of my life, so it was worth the fight.”

Robinson explained her own draw to the story, “When I first read the script, I think there’s something about Jack’s writing. You connect to every one of the characters in some way. I feel like they’re so human and so layered and to me I had fallen in love with each person you visit along the way but then especially I just loved the relationship that Mikey and Jess had, and the pain and the passion and the depth. The opportunity to tell such a human story that really focuses a lot on finding grace not just…for other people, but also grace for yourself.

She continued, “I couldn’t stop thinking about it and there’s something about the way that Jack wrote it, with the imagery, and he included music in the screenplay – I had my little playlist going at the same time while I was reading it. I couldn’t stop thinking about it. And I think that was enough for me to try and fight for it.”

Huston and Robinson thought back to moments from the film that spoke to them. Robinson said, “There are definitely certain moments for me that I will just never forget, but there’s something about this whole process, just from the start, from Jack…from every person that was involved, it felt like we all so deeply wanted to put our full selves into it that you can just feel the passion from everybody, the whole crew.”

Huston remembered his own favorite scene, “There’s a moment with Jess and Michael where they’re just sitting there, and he just holds her hand and I don’t know why, but that annihilates me. I think in that moment because you completely understand that these two have this entire history that you manage to convey in such a short amount of time completely based on love. It’s like, there is love, still between these people. Even if it’s shrouded in so much anger and hate and confusion and all the rest of it, and I think that’s the complexity of the human spirit, is that nothing is so simple, nothing is simple.”

Day of the Fight is set to be released on Dec. 6, 2024.
