Demetria McKinney, who stars in Motherland: Fort Salem, chatted with uInterview about the new show – and why she believes in the supernatural.
Motherland: Fort Salem is set in an alternate universe where witches have historically been persecuted in America, so they cut a deal with the government to serve in the army to end their torture. The main enemy is a group called “The Spree” that uses magic to kill and can disguise themselves as normal people.
“I teach all the young ladies how to harness their power,” said McKinney, who plays Anacostia, a drill sergeant. She noted that the all-female army is made up of a diverse group of actors.
“One of the best moments working with them was the very first day we all met,” said McKinney. “Everybody is from all these different places, just seeing how different we were, some of the different lingos, the different experiences we’ve had in the industry, or if this was new for us, just really getting to know each other was really cool,” she continued.
She also found that the actors, including herself, are all drastically different from the characters they portray on screen.
“I’m goofy as all get out!” she laughed.
And, although witches may not exist in real life, McKinney said that the supernatural exists somewhere.
“I think we’re crazy if we think there is not something else out there,” she said. “The universe is just way too vast.”
