Legendary singer Melba Moore is back with a new album, titled Imagine, but she recently sat for a conversation reflecting back on her iconic hit “This Is It” with uInterview founder Erik Meers.

“After I got into Hair, I didn’t really have a manager or anything,” she said. “It was really providence that brought me there.”

The singer and actress revealed that the first audition she went up for after completing Hair was Purlie, which she won a Tony Award for. After that, the record deal offers started to roll in.

“We started to look for what type of music I was going to sing,” Moore explained. “We decided we should try to get on radio. My management company, which was then run by myself and my then-husband Charles Huggins, went and got Van McCoy because he had ‘The Hustle’ which was bringing disco into the whole world. He wrote ‘This Is It’ for me.”

Moore added that she wasn’t surprised by the success of the song, because she believed in the team around her, “It wasn’t just me singing … I wasn’t doing it by myself.”

Imagine is available for streaming on all platforms now.
