VIDEO EXCLUSIVE: Mark Indelicato & Vincent Rodriguez Discuss Being Gay Role Models In ‘With Love’

Actors Mark Indelicato and Vincent Rodriguez III describe how their characters from the Prime Video series With Love can serve as positive role models in an exclusive uInterview.

Rodriquez, who plays Henry, spoke with uInterview founder Erik Meers about how crucial the scene where Henry and Jorge, Indelicato’s character, get engaged is.

“Particularly for me, it was important for me portraying Henry to let that be a sign of love. You know because we know from season one Henry isn’t about the grand gestures, but he obviously is more than willing to do that if that’s what Jorge needed,” he said. “And so this just a part two of that and I think that’s just a testament to Henry’s commitment to you know his partners, his spouse, his loves needs. I think we can all relate to that. Like stepping out of our own personal comfort zone for a loved one. And that’s to me what that moment represented.”

He also reflected on the context surrounding the proposal and how important this representation is.

“It was also just such a beautiful celebratory moment how often do we get to see something like that like Latino family, big house, all the relatives are there, this big grand gesture. You know using the family members of the person you’re proposing to … it was really about that kind of fun, creativity that can occur when you’re just trying to create something special for someone that you love. And that’s what that moment represented and I think we knocked it out of the park.”

Indelicato commented the characters are simply two people who love each other and that’s what’s most important about this relationship.

“I think it would be a disservice to our community to not also represent the lovely monogamous gay couple that’s very very happy in their relationship and I think that’s exactly what it is,” he said. “I think to try and intellectualize it too much is also a disservice to their relationship, they just like each other. That’s it, they like each other, they want to be with each other and it doesn’t really require much more investigation than that to me.”

Rodriguez emphasized how these two men are well suited for each other, despite how different they are.

“Well that’s the thing is that like Jorge and Henry are so different right, but that’s also what’s beautiful about them,” he said. “They have differences, they complement one another… There’s this unconditional love and appreciation. When that’s the foundation of the relationship anything you build on it can stand and I think this show does something particularly well and it showcases the optics of that and how it can be challenging and tumultuous but ultimately at the end of the day when it comes to someone you love, you do stick your neck out, you do face those uncomfortable moments and because you go through it together, you come out of it stronger together. ”

Rodriguez noted that the theme of the series is the characters’ love for each other.

“We are breaking some tropes and stereotypes and we’re also shining light on the reality that there are couples like us, like Jorge and Henry, that actually exist in the world we just haven’t seen them told in this way,” he said. “That theme is inherent throughout With Love, we are breaking so many stereotypes and we have this level of representation with the ensemble cast that I don’t think we often see in television and it just so happens that it’s coming at a time where we need that kind of uplifting, romantic, loving, compassionate, accepting storytelling. Now more than ever.”

With Love Season Two is now streaming on Prime Video.
