The Morning Show star Mark Duplass has some work he doesn’t want his kids to see, but now, he’s making his debut in a children’s series on a show called Pretzel and the Puppies. He voices dachshund Pretzel, the dad, as the show follows Pretzel, Greta the mom, and their five puppies as they learn lessons surrounding the meaning of being a part of a community.

In his new uInterview with Erik Meers, Duplass offered insight into why he decided to make such a big departure from his previous very adult work.

“I’ve never really done anything like this before,” Duplass said. “Some of the things I’ve done, I’m not going to show my children for a number of reasons, but this was something I felt like was really family-oriented and I also really liked the messaging of community building. I do feel like there are a lot of good family shows out there, you know what it means to be a good parent, but I think there’s something special here that really considers what it means to be an asset to your community.”

Duplass lends his voice to Big Mouth‘s Val Bilzerian, but he signed onto the project with minimal experience in voiceover work. He explained that the show’s writer and producer Steve Altiere played a big role in why he felt comfortable taking on the role.

“I’ve done some voiceover work … little things here and there but I wouldn’t consider myself a voice artist by any means, so it was a little new for me,” Duplass said. “Steve Altiere was very helpful in terms of encouraging me to be a version of myself that was also properly heightened for what it means to grab a kid’s attention. It was good for me to figure out that needle. In general, our approach with Pretzel was to keep him upbeat and positive, but essentially make it not too dissimilar to who I am.”

Pretzel and the Puppies is now available to stream on Apple TV+.
