VIDEO EXCLUSIVE: Louise Linton & Kristen Ruhlin On Their Revenge Fantasy Film, ‘Chick Flick’
In a new uInterview, Louise Linton and Kristen Ruhlin shared their experience making the film Chick Flick.
Linton explained to uInterview founder Erik Meers how she starred in the original film in 2013, but after finishing it still felt that something was missing.
“I loved the script. I thought it was so charming but this sort of predated a lot of the social media and dating apps. But I really identified with what this story was about and we had a great time filming it. And then once the filmmakers were in the edit, we just had the feeling that the story wasn’t sort of connecting the way that we’d all intended.”
After deciding to reshoot the movie, Linton decided to update it by adding Tinder, Bumble and other online dating platforms to the storyline.
“We added 50% to the screenplay and reshot quite a bit of it both in Washington, D.C., and Los Angeles and all over the place,” Linton shared.
The film begins with a bride at her wedding when she finds out that her fiance cheated on her. She leaves him at the altar and, in the original film, she decides to date multiple men to understand why men cheat.
Linton explained how the new film “should be about a girl who’s seeking revenge and she’s finding hundreds of guys on all of these different dating apps because that’s very much today’s world. So that was really the key difference, it was a girl that was just dating guys and we decided to flip it and make it really about social media, like, follows, trolls, haters, lovers, hashtags and all of that, and really bring it into the contemporary world of online dating.”
The title of the film was specifically chosen to be “tongue in cheek” and “very self-aware.” Linton describes it as a “sort of girl anthem and this character has a lot of fun and we had a lot of fun as the filmmakers really playing in and digging at men on the whole a lot of generalizations, stereotypes.”
Producer Ruhlin added, “That’s kind of like the fun of Chick Flick – it’s like, red flag or shag?”
The film centers itself around the idea of revenge, which the character achieves, but also includes an overarching idea.
“But at the end of the film, there’s definitely a moral of the story and she’s learned that perhaps all of her initial theories about men may not be true,” Linton described.
When Linton decided that the film should be reshot, she did not plan on directing the film. Ruhlin pushed her to become the director because she knew that Linton was capable.
Ruhlin joked that Linton “got bit by the directing bug” because after the film was over, she directed the film Me You Madness.
The only obstacles the two women faced were long hours and working with actors who had not been professionally trained.
“It was challenging but it was also good fun because when you’re working with non-actors who are actually talented and have good improv skills it makes it really good fun. The original shoot was quite grueling,” Linton explained.
The movie is meant to be light-hearted fun that is enjoyable to most audiences.
“This is popcorn, girls night, guys night, whatever if you’re just looking for some light entertainment that’s silly and playful, you don’t want to take it too seriously,” Linton described. “This is intended to just be popcorn, chocolate, fun. Pour a glass of wine, pour a glass of apple juice and just enjoy yourself and enjoy the laughs because I think there’s quite a few of them.”
Chick Flick is now available to stream on leading VOD services.
