Significant Other, a new thriller-drama that premiered this weekend at New York ComicCon, follows a couple as they embark on a backpacking trip through the Pacific Northwest. It all takes a dark turn when they realize that nothing is as it seems.
Jake Lacy, the White Lotus star who plays Harry, and Maika Monroe, who plays Ruth, spoke with uInterview founder Erik Meers at NYCC to reveal how they got involved with the film.
“I had worked with the directors before on a project called Villains and had the most incredible time,” Monroe said. “They came to me with this next project and I read the script ad it was quite good and I said yes!”
“I had seen Villains and they didn’t write the script for me, but they did send it to me,” Lacy added. “I’d never seen a script that was a genre-bending, intertwining of horror and thriller and comedy and rom-com all mashed into one. I spoke with them on Zoom and they were lovely and it felt like there was a real vision for it and flew to Portland and made a movie.”
The actors also discussed how they would describe their on-screen relationship.
“Sweat lodge!” Lacy answered laughingly. “Fully clothed sweat lodge. It was so cool. We were out of town. We were all out of towners. We met a couple who were in their 60s who were tired and just boozin’ and crusin’ down the coast. It felt like these little summer camp memories of like palling around and making a movie that you don’t get when it’s a hundered million dollars and a lot of ego. It felt awesome.”
Significant Other is now streaming on Paramount+.
