VIDEO EXCLUSIVE: House Of Ho’s Washington Ho On Fighting Alcoholism, Lesley & Judy Ho On Not Wanting To Be Role Models

House of Ho follows the lives of a rich Vietnamese-American family in Houston, Texas.

Reality stars Washington Ho, Lesley Ho and Judy Ho recently sat down with uInterview founder Erik Meers to discuss their lives.

Washington began with revealing how the show has helped him on his journey to sobriety.

“It’s the toughest thing I’ve ever done by far,” he said. “It’s probably even tougher than watching my marriage go through the struggles that it does. I’ve struggled with sobriety for a long time and growing up I’ve always been molded that I’m a man, I’m Asian, and that I should be able to control my drinking. Unfortunately, that’s not something I can control. To have to face that from the world, it’s super hard. It continues to be hard. It’s that pressure that makes Washington Ho thrive and that’s why I’m grateful for this show. Sobriety and my relationship with my wife has gotten better, but what I’ve learned is that I have to own that journey to be successful in the journey. That’s what it’s taught me.”

Lesley and Judy and Washington continued on to explain why they don’t want to be Asian role models.

“I think we’re the only ones crazy enough to air our dirty laundry because most Asian families would not do that,” Judy shared. “Even our parents sometimes are like, ‘Oh, don’t talk about this, don’t talk about that.’ Me, Wash and Leslie, we’re very much like, ‘Oh, we’re showing it all.’ I feel like people of our generation don’t feel like they need to save face anymore. Everyone struggles. Let’s just let everyone connect at that level.”

“For me, being Asian and being male, it’s in our culture – the drinking, the partying, everything whether it’s a good day or a bad day, it’s like ‘Hey, let’s take shots!’ If you watch any Asian person’s social media on the weekend, all they do is drop bottles,” Washington said. “For me to do the opposite of that and to stop, it’s really hard, but the rewarding thing is the messages I get from around the world of me inspiring other Asian males that sobriety is a good thing and it’s okay to admit weakness.”

“I love that the show has created a space to show inclusivity and diversity, the shared identity we have with other Asians and also the shared pain with Asian hate going on,” Lesley added. “To see that we’re not alone. I don’t know about role models, but if it gives anyone a sense of peace or a feeling of belonging in this world to see someone else out there that is similar to them that goes through similar situations, especially in the cultural aspect, I think is a great thing.”

Season 2 of House of Ho returns on August 25 to HBO Max.
