VIDEO EXCLUSIVE: George Lopez, Selenis Leyva & Al Madrigal On What Makes Their Show ‘Lopez vs Lopez’ Funny

Actors George Lopez, Selenis Leyva and Al Madrigal reflected on their experience filming season two of the series Lopez vs. Lopez in their new uInterview.

The sitcom follows George and Mayan, a previously estranged father and daughter, as they make up for the lost time in their relationship. With George’s return to their lives, he becomes a dependable source of unorthodox parental wisdom for Mayan, especially regarding her son, Chance. Meanwhile, although they maintain a civil relationship, George’s former spouse, Rosie, still harbors some resentment toward him. The Lopez family perseveres through their fair share of family drama, fueled by the desire to stay on good terms.

Lopez described how he learned to make light of serious topics. “I think growing up, a lot of the times that people were losing it with alcohol, it just became funny,” he told uInterview founder Erik Meers. “My grandfather never danced. [When] he would dance, my grandmother knew that was his tell, she’d cut him off [from drinking]. But you know, the sense of humor where you’re teasing somebody, but always there’s a grain of truth, and that’s what always made me laugh. So I find success in my shows when we do that.”

When asked about her favorite memory working with Lopez, Leyva said, “Literally every single episode. It’s beautiful to watch it unfold. I get to learn. I come from more of the dramatic world, so kind of learning the tools of the trade from two wonderful comedic people is amazing. And I was so nervous when I saw George Lopez pop on the screen when I auditioned for this, on the zoom, I was like, ‘Oh my god, this is George Lopez. I have to be funny for George Lopez.'”

With a laugh, Madrigal remembered, “Sometimes when I have a good ad-lib before a run-through or something, he says, ‘Save it for show night.’ And then on Tuesdays when we usually tape, George’s ad-libs that I don’t know, that he saved for show night, are so funny. Watching him be free and loose, it’s so fun, man.”

Madrigal continued, “What’s great about the show is that it’s super silly. There’s a ton of jokes, but there’s genuine heart, and you see that between the two Lopezes, but then we see that with all of our characters, so there are very heartfelt moments that we all get to play out, and that’s what really makes this show great.”

Season Two of Lopez vs. Lopez airs on Tuesday nights at 8 p.m. ET on NBC.
