VIDEO EXCLUSIVE: Erin Doherty Reveals How Social Media Plays A Role In ‘Chloe’

Chloe, Amazon Prime’s new twisty drama, follows Instagram-obsessed Becky Green who obsessively tracks the life of seeminly perfect Chloe … until she mysteriously dies. Becky assumes an alter-ego and through deceit, worms her way into Chloe’s circle of friends at the risk of losing who she is in her quest to find out what happened to Chloe.

Erin Doherty, who stars as Becky, recently sat down with uInterview founder Erik Meers to discuss social media’s impact on our world and what she hopes viewers will take away from the watching Becky’s relationship with Instagram.

“Social media is such a huge part of our world, culturally across generations,” Doherty said. “Why aren’t we highlighting these bahaviorisms — like three o’clock in the morning, lying in bed scrolling through your phone? Most of us can relate to that. It’s not until you see it that you go, ‘Oh my god, what am I doing?’ To be a part of highlighting these odd behaviors that we’ve just completely normalized … I was really excited to be a part of that. I pray that our relationship with social media is just about to turn. I think people are starting to understand how addictive it can be and that it’s not the be all end all. It’s so easy to think that way. It’s easy to think likes and followers equate to having a good life, but it’s just not true.”

Doherty also revealed how she was able to relate to the character she played on screen.

“Becky sees herself as an outsider and for whatever reason, I don’t know whether it’s nature or nurture, but I’ve always felt like a bit of an outside,” the actress shared. “I’ve always been a bit of a floater, like at school I was like, ‘Oh, I’ll hang out with you today,’ or ‘Okay, now I’ll go and do this.’ I’ve just never quite felt rooted in any way. I completely relate with that and I understand what it is to prefer your own company from time to time, but that can then lead to just instinctively spending too much time alone. Then it goes the opposite way like, ‘Oh, I just need to go and see some people.’ So I know what it’s like to be the reason for your own isolation. I really empathize with her. It’s easy to find yourself in that situation. I hope, if it reaches one person, then that’s all that matters.”

Season one of Chloe streams on Amazon Prime starting June 26.
