VIDEO EXCLUSIVE: Chyler Leigh & Evan Williams On Why Men Should Watch ‘The Way Home’

Actors Chyler Leigh and Evan Williams discussed their hopes for season two of their time travel drama, The Way Home, in an exclusive new uInterview.

The Way Home follows three generations of Landry women who embark on a journey to find their way back to each other after life-changing events force them apart. The show jumps back and forth between time periods, going back as early as the 1800s.

“The audience is going to absolutely lose their minds over the 1800s, the production value is so great. It’s like Outlander but it’s Hallmark so there’s a lot of heart there,” Williams said. His character, Elliot Augustine, is a close friend of the Landry family.

“Thematically, the adult Elliot is explored through young Elliot in 1999, 2000 and 2001,” Williams explained. “We get to see more of why he is the way he is and what makes him tick, which I think will be really rewarding to audiences. Elliot has a challenging arc this year and it’s a real journey for him.”

When asked about a favorite behind-the-scenes memory, Leigh expressed appreciation for her role as executive producer.

“I had much more space to give my input this year and it has been so rewarding,” she said. “Being behind the camera is something that I absolutely love, so watching the processes of creating these environments and creating these worlds and how difficult that actually can be, I love being a part of that.”

Williams believes that there is a “rare quality” about the show.

“It’s felt that way since the very beginning. I think maybe it was because everybody was united around the prospect of doing something that was going to flip the script, both for the network and for what audiences are used to seeing,” Williams said. “We all sort of felt like a bit of a renegade crew. In season two, it was amazing because the vast majority of the crew returned, both the cast and those behind the scenes. It’s the same family that had grown up together and that low-level attrition is rare. Usually, there’s a lot more turnover in television… The heart that is there has sort of kept the family together, and I think audiences are going to be able to trust that.”

He hopes that audiences will take an interest in Elliot as a person, not just a love interest, in season two.

“Especially for the men in the audience, we’ve gotten a lot of feedback from fans that they watch the show with their whole families, it’s one of those rare shows,” he said. “I love when they say, ‘My husband started watching from the doorway, and then he sat on the edge of the couch and then asked me when the next episode would be on.’ I hope that a lot of the men in the audience will feel represented by what the writers and I are trying to provide: a vulnerable story about a man really learning how to love himself.”

Leigh is excited for the audience to watch her character, Kat, learn and grow from season one.

“Kat is so used to being at the helm in everything and having her hands in everything, trying to either fix or create all the time,” Leigh said. “There are a lot of moments when she just has to accept where things are, which is a big step for her… As she is coming to understand some things about the past that she didn’t know, and how unfavorable they might be, she is learning and growing just as the audience will learn and grow about these characters.”

Season two of The Way Home is now available on the Hallmark Channel.
