Canadian actor Calum Worthy reflected on his new drama Sew Torn, which premiered this week at SXSW in Austin, Texas.
Worthy, who is known for roles such as Dez on the Disney Channel series Austin & Ally and Alex Trimboli in the Netflix series American Vandal, said that the movie follows a seamstress who comes across a crime and “has to make a choice.”
“I don’t want to give too much away in terms of what his involvement is because I don’t want to spoil it, but [my character] also has to make some big decisions and he has to figure out if he’s going to chart his own path or follow in the footsteps of what people want him to be,” he told uInterview founder Erik Meers.
When asked what his favorite scene in the Freddy MacDonald-directed movie was, Worthy remembered, “There was a scene in a diner, where it had a lot of practical effects, and that was a great example of showing Freddy’s incredible ability to do practical effects. As much as we could, we tried to make it practical. Because he’s a very cinematic director and he really wants to make sure you really feel that in the moment… it’s a big climactic moment, but the effects are insane and it’s really a testament to Freddy’s ability.”
On his favorite off-screen moment, Worthy said, “There was a scene, it’s about a seven-minute long scene, and we would do these really long takes throughout the whole process, the scenes are kind of split up, but we filmed it all at once. And one of the things that’s really nice about Freddy, and Sebastian, who is our incredible cinematographer, is they almost choreograph the moments together so it’s almost like we were dancing emotionally.”
He continued, “So I was doing my thing and they would track it around where my eyes were going, and then once in a while, Freddie said, ‘You can do this.’ Or he would say something, the character would want to hear in their mind, and it would switch it up.”
Worthy added, “It was a really amazing way to work because it feels felt like we’re all in it together, it felt like we were almost all actors in that scene together even though it was crew, director, actor, but it felt we were all performers working.”
Sew Torn also stars actors Caroline Goodall, K. Callan and Ron Cook.
