Everyone’s favorite super hero parody, The Tick, is back on the small screen. This time, the action-comedy is an Amazon series and will be made available to stream on Friday, August 25.
Peter Serafinowicz, who plays the titular character, recently sat down with uInterview founder Erik Meers to discuss Tick, the new show, and his co-stars.
While there have been several iterations of The Tick – the character was first created by Ben Edlund in 1986 – the super hero has always been blessed with some quirky personality traits and some strange powers.
“He has two powers really, he is nigh-invulnerable – you can interpret that however you want. He can also leap extremely high. He can’t fly but he can leap, like, one hundred feet in the air,” Serafinowicz told uInterview exclusively.
But the thing that makes him most loved by fans, is his child-like personality and his witty parody of the world of super heroes that people are so obsessed with.
“He is the embodiment of what a super hero is, like, the old fashioned idea of what a super hero is like,” said Serafinowicz.
“He’s got a very strong sense of what is good and what is evil. When he is in that mode, he is quite an impressive dude. Anything outside of that sphere, he becomes far less impressive and confused. He doesn’t know some very basic things about life in general.”
Despite this consistency between iterations of The Tick, the shows have been reflections of the time that they were created in, and this newest version is no different. At least, that’s what Serafinowicz’s co-star Griffin Newman says. “Griffin is a huge Tick fan, this is his favorite thing since he was a kid,” Serafinowicz mentioned.
Explaining that TV has changed – the show is, after all, one of the many new shows broadcast on an online streaming service – Serafinowicz joked that in this new landscape, “We need more super hero shows. There hasn’t been one for years!”
Nonetheless, The Tick is different the actor says.
“I think it’s different from every other super hero show. Its got a very different thing that I can’t define but it’s nothing like anything I’ve ever seen and it’s certainly not like anything I’ve ever done before.”
The Tick is now streaming on Amazon Prime.
