Khaled Hosseini, the mastermind behind the international bestselling novel The Kite Runner, has penned And the Mountains Echoed, a new novel about two siblings living in Afghanistan. “The intention is for [the novel] to become a kind of mosaic,” he told Uinterview in an exclusive interview. “In that once the reader is done with the book, he has heard individual voices, the cumulative effect being it’s kind of like a choir.”
Born in Kabul, Afghanistan, Hosseini and his family moved to France when he was 11. They were unable to move back to their homeland due to the Saur Revolution that was taking place in Afghanistan. Hosseini and his family eventually political asylum in the U.S. Growing up, Hosseini indulged his love of writing by writing his own stories. Despite his passion for creative writing, Hosseini practiced medicine for ten years and earned his M.D., but never gave up on his love of writing. He made his debut with the highly acclaimed bestseller The Kite Runner, which was adapted into a film four years later. Hosseini has also founded the Khaled Hosseini Foundation, which provides humanitarian assistance to Afghanistan.
Hosseini’s dynamic And the Mountain’s Echo is already gaining praise from critics for its emotionally gripping tale. “All the pressure I feel is whether I can do it,” he told Uinterview, “Whether I am able to continue doing something for which I’ve had a life-long love for.”
