In Real Steel, Anthony Mackie, 34, had to keep up with iron-man Aussie Hugh Jackman. “He definitely put me in a position to understand what hard work meant,” Mackie told Uinterview exclusively. “Somebody like Hugh Jackman, you don’t expect him to show up every day, prepared and focused on the task at hand and he was that guy.”

Julliard graduate and New Orleans native, Mackie has had a distinguished career both on Broadway and in Hollywood. He was first known to audiences with his 2002 performance as Papa Doc, a rival of Eminem’s Rabbit character in 8 Mile. From there he went on to appear in such films as Million Dollar Baby and The Man. But his big break came with his 2009 performance in The Hurt Locker opposite Jeremy Renner.

But Mackie appreciated the silliness of the Steel set. “I just felt like I had never done anything like this in my career before. Having the opportunity to just jump around and wear crazy clothes and scream and yell,” Mackie told Uinterview. “So, I really wanted to do it and wanted to do it with a director I could trust and Shawn [Levy] was definitely that guy.”

Q: Was filming scenes more difficult working with robots? - MariaCavaliere

It was jarring. I live by the Jack Bauer state of mind. If you walk in a room and something does not compute, shoot first and ask questions later. So, you walk in a room and there were these 8, 9-foot tall robots.

Q: Thanks. What was it like working a film that was reliant on CGI? Is it much different than your previous film experience? - MariaCavaliere

So, I’ve never experienced working with something that big and yet having a mind of it[s] own and looking around and reaching at you and giving you a menacing glare, so I just stayed as far away as possible.

Q: What was your experience working with Hugh Jackman on Real Steel? - A Grinshpan

It was a lot of fun… it was a lot of fun. He definitely put me in a position to understand what hard work meant. Somebody like Hugh Jackman, you don’t expect him to show up every day, prepared and focused on the task at hand and he was that guy. It was funny, one day, we were on set and the robots were just everywhere and we were trying to figure out the shot and Hugh came up to me and he was like, “You wanna smoothie?” I was like, “Wow, Hugh Jackman just gave me a smoothie.” It was a good smoothie. But it was a good time. It was a really good time.

Q: You’ve taken on such diverse characters in different movies. What made you decide to take on this role? Thanks. - A Grinshpan

I just felt like I had never done anything like this in my career before. Having the opportunity to just jump around and wear crazy clothes and scream and yell. So, I really wanted to do it and wanted to do it with a director I could trust and Sean was definitely that guy.
