On NBC’s cult drama Hannibal, the bond between title character Dr. Hannibal Lecter (Mads Mikkelsen) and Will Graham (Hugh Dancy) begins as nothing more than a meeting facilitated by agent Jack Crawford (Laurence Fishburne). Throughout the first season, we watch as Lecter begins to take a keen interest in Graham—going so far as to take a whiff of his aftershave. As the show progresses, so does Will’s dependency, and Hannibal’s interest becomes increasingly intense.
It’s no wonder fans begin to speculate about the gay undertones of their relationship. At Comic-Con 2014, uInterview asked series regular Scott Thompson, creator Bryan Fuller, producer Michael Rymer (producer) and regular Caroline Dhavernan if they think Hannibal is, in fact, gay. While most of them suggested it is nothing more than a passionate “bromance,” Thompson offers a more expansive explanation. “Most people just need a little nudge into sexuality that’s not in their world,” Thompson told uInterview. “And I think everybody probably have someone that’s the wrong gender that they could have sex with. You know, if Michelle Rodriguez came at me with a strap-on I might go, ‘Eh, what the hell.’ ”
