VIDEO EXCLUSIVE: John Gallagher Jr. Reveals What Winona Ryder Gave Him On The Set Of ‘Gone In The Night’

Gone in the Night follows a woman named Kath, played by Winona Ryder, and her younger boyfriend Max, played by John Gallagher Jr. The couple travels to a remote cabin, which happens to be double-booked by a Gen-Z couple couple, played by Owen Teague and Brianne Tju. When Max disappears in the night with the younger woman, Kath is determined to find out what happened even as the truth grows stranger and stranger.

Gallagher recently sat down with uInterview founder Erik Meers to discuss what it was like working with the legendary Winona Ryder.

“It was incredibly surreal. I’ve been a fan of hers forever, I mean who hasn’t?” Gallagher said. “I grew up with her films. I had a massive crush on her, living in the suburbs of Wilmington, Delaware, when I was a little kid renting all of her movies on VHS from the video store. When a script landed in my inbox last summer, and my agent said, ‘Hey, check this script out. Winona Ryder really, really likes you and wants you to play her younger boyfriend,’ I couldn’t believe it. Just the fact that she knew who I was and was familiar with my work! When I showed up the first day at rehearsal, she ran up and she hugged me and everybody around me kept asking me, ‘How long have you known Winona? Do you guys go way back?,’ and I was like, ‘No, I just met her!’ Everybody was assuming we knew each other because he had this instant kinship and camaraderie. We like a lot of the same things from music to movies to theater to books to poetry. Everything is very aligned.”

The actor even revealed a gift he received from Ryder on the first day on set.

“The first day I got there, I couldn’t believe it,” Gallagher began. “She came up to the table read with a paper bag and she opened it. She was like, ‘Hey, I have something for you.’ This is the first time I’m meeting her. She pulled out a vintage 1991 Replacements concert t-shirt from their last actual tour as a band. She was like, ‘I heard through the grapevine that you were a huge Replacements fan.’ I don’t know how she found that out, but she did somehow and she gave me this concert t-shirt that she’s had in her closet since the early ’90s. That kind of set the tone for the rest of the shoot. Total love fest. I was asking her so many questions about her past about working with this director and working with that director and what was it like to shoot The Crucible and work with Tom Waits? I couldn’t get enough of it!”
